The specifications of the Kodak EasyShare Z are impressive. I had trouble hearing the beep for locking focus and the click for taking the picture. While largely plastic, the body feels solid enough. It’s a lot like its predecessor, but for the most part, that’s okay. The macro mode works well, but it can only take pics up to 6cm away.
If shooting in auto mode, a press of this button merely turns off the basic information at the top of the screen – selected shooting and flash modes, resolution, number of shots remaining – to provide a ‘clean’ image. The small User Guide that comes with the camera gives you a useful tour of the camera and its z95. The Z comes with only a very cursory user guide. It certainly eaxyshare look or feel like a budget model.

Press this and the camera readies itself for action in a very respectable time of just under two seconds, lens barrel extending to maximum wideangle setting and the clear rear LCD blinking into life. Providing a focal range of mm, the Kodak Z makes up for its lack of wide-angle capability by offering a wealth of features for beginners and more experienced photographers alike.
Encouragingly, with an all-black finish the camera suggests itself as one of Kodak’s more serious propositions of late. It’s similarly easy to determine the shutter release’s halfway point, the Z emitting a ‘dink’ sound and the central AF area highlighting in green to confirm focus and exposure have been determined and the user can proceed to take the shot.
We do however get MPEG-4 compression format high definition quality x pixels video not quite Full HD x pixels at a very respectable frame rate of 30fps, offering up to a maximum 29 minutes per sequence, depending of course on available data storage capacity.
Unsurprisingly this Kodak camera also features a ‘share’ button to earmark individual images for instant printing via a PictBridge compatible device or email, when the camera is connected to your desktop via USB lead. The easysharr button down, marked with a lower-case ‘i’ is, naturally enough, one for ‘info’.
Kodak says that a fully charged Z can take about photos and our testing came very close to this estimate. Are you happy with what you have, or not?

The EasyShare Z therefore comes across as all the camera you’d reasonably expect… and a little bit more. We’ve been spoilt recently by screens on compacts with the resolution more commonly fund on digital SLRs, easjshare against these the visibility provided by the Z’s k dots is decidedly average – inevitably suffering in strong late summer sunlight.
